Kabuki is a style of Japanese theatre founded in the 17th century mainly in Edo (current day Tokyo). It is a mix of dance, mime, staging, music and costuming. The word Kabuki is formed with three characters: “ka” which means “song”, “bu” which means “dance”, and “ki” which means “skill”. Kabuki can also mean “slanted”, implying eccentric behavior. In the plays, the story is not as important as the exaggerated movements of the famous actors and the whole production of the play. |
